Two Months

Time has just flown by. I can’t believe that he is already two months old. I can still vividly remember giving birth. He has grown a lot in the last month. He is now 25” long (off the charts for height) and 13#9oz (90th percentile). He has slowed down weight gain and is only gaining about 1.5oz per day instead of the 2oz/day he was at 1 month. He is starting to outgrow a lot of his 0-3 month clothing. Some of the 0-6 month we have are starting to fit him nicely which makes me doubtful that we will end up being able to use them when he is 6 months. I need to go through his clothes and put away the ones he outgrew and prep the next ones as I only have up to 3-6 month out right now.

He is starting to smile more and more on purpose and in reaction to us. I love it! He is getting the cooing and the giggling going to. This boy has truly wrapped me around his little finger. (I’m pretty sure Darrell is wrapped around the other one as well. :P) We love getting lots of photos of him (as I’m sure you can tell), the downside is that he doesn’t know what to think of the phone. He will be smiling and giggling but as soon as he sees the camera, the smile turns into a WTF face. We are trying to get sneakier about getting photo and video of him smiling. It is definitely hard to get a good one. Thank goodness we have digital photos with the amount of photos we take.

Edward has got a bit of a tummy, so we had to pull the cloth diapers out a snap. Makes me happy he is growing but sad that he is growing so fast. We have also found out that he sleeps much, much better on his side than on his back. Once we started putting him on his side, he started sleeping for anywhere from 5-7 hours at a time at night. It makes this momma happy that I am getting sleep! The only issue we have had lately is that he goes down for naps just fine during the day. but once it hits about 6pm until about 10:30-11, he is nursing every hour and refuses to sleep. He gets cranky and just seems like he has hit the stage where he is so tired he can’t sleep. We are definitely working on that and I hope it gets better. We are a little tired of one of us trying for half an hour, the other one trying for half an hour and then the first one goes back for another half hour before he finally goes down. Then it is easy peasy until the next night. He wakes up and gets a feeding between midnight and one and then doesn’t wake up until between 6-7. Eats and goes right back down until 9am. This is a lot like he was in the womb as he use to have his “dance party” every night around 9pm.

He loves holding his head up and ‘standing’ on us. We have also found that he likes sitting and facing forward so I usually hold him on my lap facing forward a lot and he will just sit there and look around while gnawing on his hand. Still hasn’t found the thumb reliably, but has gotten the thumb/forefinger suck down.

We are just enthralled by this little boy and are completely in love. Darrell is excited and ready for #2 already. 🙂 – not happening for another year at least.

After we got back from Vancouver, we had a pretty busy week. That weekend was the Seattle Scottish Highland Games and we headed down to the fairgrounds on Saturday so Darrell could finish getting the items he needed for his Bagpipe outfit. It was also a way for him to find a local piper band to play with. There were a lot of bagpipes there and it was amazing. We absolutely loved it. We randomly ran into one of Darrell’s college friends (Larkin) and she was excited to meet Edward. Darrell got everything he needed and he even found out that he had a choice between a lot of bands to play with. He ended up going to two rehearsals and found one that he liked, so he will start practice again on Thursday nights (with the exception of this Thursday when we leave for Athabasca, AB). Depending on what we are doing next year, Darrell wants to go down and camp out for the whole weekend with everyone. We shall see though. 🙂

That also happened to be the weekend that one of Darrell’s college friends (Julia, Mitch & their son Colin) was moving into town. Michelle & Jim (more college friends) were coming into town to visit them, so we all got together for dinner and then some of us hung out at the park across the street from us the next day. It was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to spending more time with Julia et al. At least it will be fun for me since we are both stay-at-home moms. It will be the much needed adult interaction when we have had enough child only interaction. 🙂

We headed up to Vancouver, BC to visit Darrell’s Grandad and Marie while Darrell attended an IEEE conference. It was a long week, but it was a nice first trip to Canada for Edward. We weren’t sure for awhile if we would be able to go as there were problems getting Edward’s birth certificate so we weren’t going to be able to get his passport without having to spend a lot of money for the expedited one. Luckily, we found out that if you are driving to Canada or Mexico, children don’t need a passport until they are 15 years old. They only need their birth certificates. Yay for us!

We left Seattle on Friday night around 7:30 and got into Vancouver around 10:30. It was quick and fairly pain-less. We crossed the border at the 539 near Aldergrove since it was only slated to be a 5 minute wait and I-5 was slated to be a 45 minute wait. Edward does not do well in his carseat in the car if the car is not moving, plus we would have needed to stop and feed him if we had to tack on another hour to the trip. Grandad & Marie had a nice room waiting for us and Edward slept great the whole time we were there. We got up early on Saturday and headed out to go catch the ferry over to visit Mary & Maurice at their place in Sechelt. It was a blast and they had a gorgeous view. We only stayed there for one night and then headed back to West Vancouver.

Darrell’s conference started on Monday in Downtown Vancouver, so he took the bus to downtown and spent the day down there. It was hard as it was his first long day away from Edward. Before then, the longest he spent away was a few hours when I would head out to do the shopping et al during the week. He was at the conference for 4 days coming back each evening. I took Edward into Downtown Vancouver on Tuesday so Darrell’s co-workers could meet Edward and we could hang out together. Tuesday was the day there wasn’t much that Darrell wanted to do on the conference list, so we had lunch and wandered around for awhile before heading back to go out to dinner with Grandad.

Darrell finished the conference on Thursday afternoon, so we headed back on Thursday so we could get home before any weekend traffic started up. It was fun hanging out with everyone and also seeing Grandad Ross (Great-Grandad to Edward) hang out and spend time with Edward. These are definitely the moments to treasure. 🙂

July 4-8 we headed over to Sandpoint, ID for Darrell’s Grandma’s 80th birthday party and family reunion. We were a little apprehensive because it was going to be Edwards first big trip. We have taken him a few places in the car and he always did well there, so we were hoping he would be good to go the 6 hour drive there and 6 hours back. At the last minute, we decided to leave on the evening of the 3rd and drive through the night. It worked out great. Darrell drove and stopped when we needed to feed Edward and then Darrell napped while I changed, fed, and got him back in the carseat and ready to go again. Our normal 6 hour drive ended up only taking us about 8 hours. Not to shabby with a newborn. 🙂

We decided to stay with Darrell’s Uncle Adam and Aunt Linda. They have a changing table and a bassinet so it was stuff we wouldn’t have to bring. Plus there was only one other family member staying there, so it wasn’t too overwhelming for Edward. It was nice being able to pass him off to someone else so we could get a break (even though I never went far).

Overall it was a great weekend. Edward went to his first fireworks show and slept through 95% of it (then he started stirring so I went inside the host’s house so the noise would be muffled). We got to meet and spend time with a lot of the family and it was nice that Grandma Lorna got to see how much bigger Edward has gotten in the 3 weeks since she saw him last. Plus we got photos of Edward and her that we forgot to get when she was here. We took Edward down to the river and were going to dip his toes in, but he decided he was going to stay awake all day (8-4) and then he fell asleep just before we left so he slept the whole time we were at the river.

We were going to come back on the Sunday, but decided to stay an extra day so we would miss all of the holiday traffic. Darrell worked there on Monday and after he finished, we headed home. Unfortunately, Edward slept most of the day on Monday and when we got to Spokane, he decided to start waking up. After that, he was fussy and didn’t want to stay in the carseat. We had to stop a little more often than we would have liked, but he was a happy baby when we took him out of the carseat. We stopped for dinner in Ellensburg and it was the first time I had to nurse him in a restaurant. Definitely a little different, but we did it! 🙂

Best part of the whole weekend: Edward slept for 4 hours at a time the whole weekend except for Saturday night. Saturday was the birthday party and that night, Edward slept for a whole 6 hours. I woke up after 5 hours and was a little worried he hadn’t woken us up yet, but he was fine, so I let him sleep. I felt great that I had gotten so much sleep. It only lasted for the one night, but it gives me something to look forward to. 🙂

The only downside we found from the weekend was a little overstimulation for Edward. He was use to a lot of people paying attention to him and playing with him that Tuesday was rough since he wouldn’t allow us to leave him alone to do anything. He constantly wanted attention and to be near someone. It was a slow process to get him back to being ok with being on his own and we will have to figure something out for next time we visit family.

One Month!

*Granted I am 16 days late, but better late than never?*

So much has changed in the one month since Edward joined our life. He has changed so much and we are excited to experience the next couple months when he starts to become more aware and interactive with us. He has just started to smile in response to us. He doesn’t do it all the time, but when he does, it just melts our hearts. We attempt to get him to do it multiple times in a row so we know it is a response to us instead of gas. 🙂

Breastfeeding has gotten immensely easier. He is getting faster at feeding, so I am only feeding him for 5-10 minutes instead of the 15-20 it was in the beginning. Granted, he still occasionally has a 30 minute session but I have begun to realize that it is more when he just wants to suck and we are trying not to use a pacifier so we are trying to find a nice medium (which mainly means that we use our finger or a soother while sometimes using a pacifier if we get desperate and he is sucking for a long time). He still has the daily cluster feed where he wants to eat every hour for 3-4 hours. Sometimes it drives me nuts because by the time I feed him, burp him, put him down and start to do something, he is hungry again. Luckily, most of the cluster feedings happen at night and Darrell is able to help me do stuff. I pump once a day (in the mornings) so that we have a bottle’s worth of milk in the fridge at a time. If I get frustrated to much during cluster time, Darrell feeds him and then I pump in the morning. If not, then I don’t pump.

Edward is still on a 2-3 hour sleep schedule at night. He is starting to occasionally get a good 4 hour stretch and I wake up feeling recharged. Unfortunately, after the 4am feeding, he doesn’t like to go right back to sleep and wants to stay up, so I am up for about an hour and a half before feeding him again and then he goes back to sleep. I am waiting for that to change again. During the day, he is great and gives me just enough time between feedings to either take an hour nap, make food, or get some chores done. He does a single 4 hour stretch of awake time a day. Usually it is in the morning, but occasionally it is at night. He loves to just lay around and look at the different lights (sunlight and lightbulbs).

He isn’t to fussy and only occasionally does he really wail when we can’t figure out what he needs. I think we have only had about 3 good wails since we left the birth center. Other than that, he mostly cries when he wants to be fed and I am changing his diaper first, but once I pick him up, he stops. He does love to spit-up. We easily go through almost all of our receiving blankets and burp rags in a two day period. Sometimes it only takes a day. We lay them out over a chair to let them air-dry during the day. So it has me doing at least a load of laundry a day (especially with the cloth diapers).

I’m excited for the next few milestones. I know everyone says that they grow up so fast, so I am enjoying each and every moment (even the difficult ones).
