We have thrown really big parties for Edward for the first 5 years, so this year, we decided to switch it up and ask him what kind of trip he would like to do for his birthday. He chose to take a train out to Idaho to go visit his Grammy. We had to break some of his heart because we didn’t let him do it on his own, but I think he had a blast overall.

Because the train left during rush hour, we had to make sure we got there with plenty of time. We got there a little bit quicker than we thought, so we had some time to play around the terminal. I took the boys outside and we got to see some of the other trains coming and going. They were super excited and ready to get on.

Once we boarded, first thing Edward wanted to do was to play Magic, The Gathering with Daddy. The tables weren’t quite big enough, so they had an interesting time. Morgan felt left out, so mommy got him out a card game to match shapes, colors and numbers. He loved playing that. We spent some time looking out the windows and then, Darrell wandered up to the dining car and got us a table to eat some dinner. We figured we would splurge just a little bit since it happened to be our 10 year anniversary on the day we left. After Dinner we went back to our seats and the boys watched a Daniel Tiger Special and then went to sleep for the remainder of the trip.

We spent most of our trip hanging out at Darrell’s Uncle Adam and Aunt Linda’s house. Lorna had driven over her motorhome and was staying outside so she could spend as much time as she could with us. Even Darrell’s cousins  came and visited us there. It had been almost two years since the last time we were out there.

Sunday happened to actually be Edward’s birthday, so we invited people out to a quiet beach area and we hung out while the boys played in the water. Edward and Cole were really good and swam out to the dock so they could jump in. The water was a bit too cold for us adults though. I made the cake and had carried it out to Sandpoint on the train, so I am happy it survived as well as it did. He had an amazing small party and loved every minute of it. He didn’t even want to go when the rest of us were ready.

On Monday, We headed over to Darrell’s Grandma’s house, Snail’s Leap, and hung out for a little bit so we could spend some time with her. Darrell loves the area and likes to go see it to think about his childhood times spent staying there.

And then we headed home on Monday night. Completely worn out and exhausted, but having had a wonderful weekend to celebrate Edward.

We tried to take a trip out to Eastern Washington over Spring Break, but the Flu was really bad out there, so we opted to stay home. We tried again over Memorial Day Weekend and it was a success! We went out to visit some of Darrell’s Family Friends and one of his cousins. It was a relaxing weekend and Darrell enjoyed spending some time out on some property away from the big cities. Darrell’s mom came out and joined us, so the boys got to spend some quality time with her since they hadn’t seen her in almost 6 months. We spent time on High Mountain Farm, in the hotel swimming pool, and visiting Darrell’s cousin, Buck, and his family.

On the way out, we took Highway 2 over through Leavenworth and stopped for lunch and at a couple play areas. On the way back, we came over Highway 20 and stopped at a few different scenic overlooks. At Diablo Lake, a storm caught up to us and before the worst rain hit, it gave us some beautiful shots and a double rainbow. Then we got in the car, drove a bit ahead of the storm and stopped at another rest area with a cool train the kiddos could climb on.

We headed up to Mt. Vernon again for another year of the Tulip festival. The flowers were just as pretty as always. We went up when we first moved to Seattle and then hadn’t made it back up until I got pregnant with Morgan in 2016. We have gone every year since then though and it is a tradition we would like to keep while we are here. It is fun to run around and see all the flowers. I also get some great shots of the boys just in time for Edward’s birthday when I send out pictures to family.

We started our day by heading to Snow Goose Produce on the way to Roozengaarde. We stop by to grab some ice cream. We learned one year that if you go later in the day, the ice cream line is really long and the kids won’t stand still long enough. So we like to stop at the beginning of the day and let them get some sugar in them before we head to the fields so they can burn off their energy while we are there.

After we finished off our ginormous ice cream cones, we headed to Roozengaarde. They have an amazing little garden inside and then if you time the year right, they have massive fields just behind the garden. Sometimes, the field tulips are right near the garden and other times the tulips are a decent walk away from the garden. This year they were right next to the garden.

November was a busy month for us. The beginning of the month was full of MLJ gigs. There was the MLJ 50 year reunion in Humboldt on the first weekend. Then the second weekend was the very last HSU football game in Vancouver Canada. There was a small group of people going and since we figured we were close enough, we headed up there to support the HSU football team and to have some fun with friends.

After those two big weekends were over, it was crunch time for me. We hung around the house and did small things while I was finishing the prep for my Grandmother’s 80th birthday party. That will be another post though.

At the end of November, we went down to San Diego for my Grandmother’s 80th Birthday Party. I spent the last 18 months or so working on the party and am really happy with how it turned out. It took a lot of work and I had a lot of help from family, but we did it. My Grandmother was super happy with her party and a lot of guests commented on how well it turned out. Some people even said I should be a party planner. Hahaha! Not that I have time for that. We had almost 60 people attend and the location was super accommodating.
