Canning

Darrell and I decided that we wanted to give canning a shot. We were pushed along when we stopped at a fruit stand on our way back from Eastern Washington and they had 25 pound boxes of peaches for $12. We scored! So, to start along, we decided to make some peach jam.

After we did the peach jam, we made canned some sliced peaches:

After the sliced peaches, our neighbors had an apple tree that did really well this year, so they had an abundance of apples. Lucky us got a few bags from them and went ahead and made applesauce and apple pie filling:

After all that, we still had some peaches (We even put some sliced in the freezer for later), so we made some more peach jam since we really liked the first batch.

All in all, we were pretty happy with how things turned out. Darrell didn’t like the applesauce since he didn’t want to add sugar and it ended up being to tart for him. And we haven’t tried the apple pie filling yet.

Because Edward and Daddy can’t get enough of the bubbles, they play with them almost every day after Darrell finishes with work.

After that Storm and power outage, we had a little bit of cleaning up. By little bit of cleaning up, I mean we had to borrow a chainsaw and clean up the tree that fell down. We cut it up and then stacked the wood to the side so our neighbors will have some wood when they do their fire pits over the summer. While Darrell was out working on cutting up the tree, he found a bunch of plastic balls down in the undergrowth, so Edward had some stuff to do on the deck while Darrell worked. We also had a neighbor come on over and help out.

Our garden has been taking off. It has grown big and bushy over the last few months. For a little while, we only thought we were going to get basil, but now everything is starting to produce. We have gotten a few zucchini, some peas, some wax beans, some cherry tomatoes, and some broccoli (though not much). The early girl tomatoes are growing and we see at least 40 of them, but as of yet, they are all still green. The carrots are looking nice and green on top, but they aren’t quite ready to pull. The regular cucumbers just started to produce so we should have some of those soon. The lemon cucumbers haven’t produced yet, but they are flowering. All in all though, it is looking good. We know a good portion of why some of the items haven’t grown is because we have been having week long heat waves of upper 80’s to low 90’s. Once it starts to cool a little more, we might get some more stuff.

Edward’s new favorite thing to do is to water the garden. He is always trying to help in any way he can if he gets to hold the hose.

And he loves to eat the veggies straight from the garden. If we can’t see him, chances are he went down to the garden and got some tomatoes. Which is evidenced by his mouth full of tomatoes when he comes back.

He also loves to pick things from the garden. He helped Darrell pick the first batch of Basil.

Hot Weather

This last month or so has been super hot. So we have been trying everything we can to keep cool. Lots of pool time.
