July

Summers are always super busy for us as the weather is nice and we can see all sorts of different things. It also helps when we have an exchange student. So, we were super busy this month. First up we had a great 4th of July party with all of our neighbors. It was a lot of fun and I made some yummy pulled pork fries and we played in the pool outside.

We also did the Skagit Valley Highland Games. The boys decided they wanted airbrush tattoos and Edward wanted the exact same one as Fernando. Then we jumped in the car and continued up to the border to check out the Peace Arch. Check out those photos here.

The next weekend, we went up to Mt. Vernon again to check out the Clayslist sale. Then we found a nearby farm where we could pick some raspberries. That was pretty cool as we spent about an hour and we ended up with almost 40 lbs of raspberries (whoops!).

Throughout the weeks, we did our normal splash parks, fun around town, and some parties for EF. We also had Darrell’s work picnic and Darrell and Fernando went out with our neighbor on his boat to do some crabbing and visiting Jetty Island.

After we dropped Fernando off at the bus, we were asked if we would be a gap host family for some 9-year old twin boys from China. It was rough with communication issues and that we had another friend in town we hadn’t seen in awhile, but we made it work. We took the boys out and did blueberry picking with them. It was super hot so we didn’t last very long, but we still got almost 15 lbs of blueberries.

So we spent a good chunk of time working on the garden this year. Darrell spent time pulling out the dirt to put down wire to hopefully help keep the rodents out. Then he added another board to the side to raise the beds and added a bunch of compost to make them a lot richer for the vegetables. Darrell had a lot of fun doing the garden and we got a lot of vegetables from it this year. It was fabulous. We loved it and Edward loved being able to go out back and just grab some veggies when he wanted.

August

We spent a bunch of time at waterparks. We went to one and did some playdate photo shoots with the other moms and kids. We have been a group for almost 3 years and we were getting really close as friends.

We had the Radke family visiting for the first week after the Highland Games. They weren’t planning on staying long, but things happened. Edward loved getting to spend a bunch of time playing with his cousin Hazel. We also got to spend some time with our Nephew Jesse.

We also took Edward to his first fair. He had an absolute blast! He got to spend time doing a bunch of different things. He got to pet baby pigs, grind some flour, and even got to go on his first rollercoaster ride! He was super excited and had a blast riding a bunch of different rides. He was super bummed to leave, but we promised him we would be back next year.

July was a super crazy month for us! To kick off the month, we headed over to Idaho to visit the Ednie family. We try to head out that way once a year if we can. Edward has been reading a book (“Emmet’s Pig”) that Grammy had brought out once and she use to read it to Darrell when he was growing up. Because of that, Edward was super excited he got to see some pigs up close and even got to give them some weeds to nibble on! Darrell’s uncle Adam was even nice enough to let him wander out and visit with the cows. We went into town and watched the 4th of July parade and overall had a great visit. We stopped at the Wild Horse wind farm and the Columbia Gorge on our way back.

We decided to go ahead and hosted another student from Spain again. We hosted another girl, Sonia, from Valencia. It was a lot of fun and we did a bunch of traveling and seeing different things while she was here. Edward had a blast hanging out with her and was a bit sad that she left at the end of the month. We hit up Kerry Park overlooking Seattle, The Fremont Troll, Mukilteo Beach, and Dash Point State Park during the week between dropping her off and picking her up at the bus.

The first weekend she was here, we headed up to Mt. Vernon to go to the Skagit Valley Highland Games and since we were so close, we went ahead and headed over to spend some time at Deception Pass before it got to dark.

The next weekend, we headed out and did some blueberry picking. It was our first time doing this and it was a lot of fun. Hopefully we will continue doing it for as long as we live here.

Sunday after blueberry picking, we headed out again to meet with some friends and did the Wallace Falls Hike. It was a beautiful hike, but really hard on a 27 week pregnant lady. But I am happy to report that it might have taken almost 5 hours, but I made it to the lower falls and then back to the car!! Not sure when or if we will do that one again, but nice to say we did it at least once!

The following weekend, we headed down to Oregon and went to my family’s annual gathering at Pheasant Rock. Sonia wasn’t super sure as the drive to get there is longer than if you were to drive all the way across Spain. Then we forgot to make sure she knew how to use an airpad, so poor thing slept on the ground. But we made it through the weekend! We got to help paint the dining hall. Sonia got to do a lot of firsts: Camping, Road Trip, sitting in a Semi-truck, and sleeping in a car.

The last weekend in July my family made a trip up to Seattle and we had a full house. There were 9 people in our house for the whole weekend. It was insane but so much fun! We headed down to Enumclaw and the Highland Games there. Maybe we will get a chance to have a full house again sometime!

This post serves two purposes. First, it is a test of a WordPress posting app using my phone. Hopefully this will streamline the whole photos+text-to-internet thing. Second, a minor update. 🙂

The garbage disposal at our house never really worked well. It vibrated so bad it would cause the entire kitchen sink to shudder. And it took a long time to grind up even simple things.

Our awesome landlord Chris allowed us to purchase and install a new one ourselves and take it out of the rent.

Some photos of the endeavor follow. It only took about 20 minutes too!
